Wacky: Johnny Appleseed

Did you know there's a holiday on pretty much every day of the year? It's true. And they are pretty wacky (go ahead, type wacky holidays into Google). In one final effort to ward off the looming gloom of winter (although today is the official first day of spring - hooray!), we have decided to add more crafts and whatnot to our life. (I remember this same thing happening right around this same time last year...) So I am letting the boys choose one wacky holiday each week for us to celebrate. Our first wacky holiday was Johnny Appleseed Day, which I believe was on March 11. I think we did as much celebrating as possible...

First, we read this book that taught us lots about John Chapman. Well, D and I read it. Lt listened to one or two pages and then was racing cars or something (it's kind of long with lots of reading!).
(Side note: this book and its accompanying volumes were given to us by my amazing Aunt. Talk about the value of love!)

After reading our awesome book, we colored some pictures of Johnny Appleseed.

Next, we tried our hands at apple stamps. They didn't work out as great as I thought they would, but it was fun anyway. Painting is always fun, right?

Look at that art!

Told you painting is always fun - especially finger painting (not part of the plan, by the way)!

And of course we had to make an apple pie! Well, I made it. The boys were playing baseball or something. I know you are all wondering whether or not the boys actually ate the pie, so here's what happened... When I was making the pie, both kids were eating the apple filling (apples mixed with sugar, cinnamon, etc.) like it was going out of style, AND they were eating the raw dough like it was going out of style even faster. But do you think they ate it when it was actually put together and baked to golden perfection? Lt wouldn't even taste a piece. D had some and claimed that he really liked it, but the aftermath on his plate proved that what he really liked was the top layer of crust only. I give up.

Also, not pictured, we planted some apple seeds in the backyard. I told the boys they probably wouldn't grow. Let's hope they don't because we really don't need any more apple trees in the backyard. Seriously.

Happy Johnny Appleseed Day!

I read that book when I was a kid! I read a bunch of them in that series, and loved them. You are the best mom EVER. I wanna come over for crafts and whatnot.
