Space for our stuff

Anybody who has lived in an old house can appreciate the fact that there is NO storage. I guess people just lived simpler, clutter-free lives back in the day. Well, that wasn't going to work for us, so we decided to have some lovely (and I mean LOVELY) junk-storing furniture custom built for our house.

Our house has a lot of random rooms that we don't really know what to do with. The fireplace room is one of them. It was quite the room before we did some renovations - a step down room with built-in vinyl seats and a wood paneling "piece" that surrounded the fireplace. Needless to say, the paneling and vinyl are gone and we built the floor up to match everything around it. But it was still just kind of a weird space so we painted an accent wall, ripped out the old tile and had this fabulous bookshelf/mantle piece built and installed. We finally got to take our books out of the boxes they have been in for two and a half years because they finally have a home!! It is, again, fabulous. We are in the process now of picking out and installing tile on the floor and up around the fireplace. We will also probably paint the fireplace cover black until we can do something more fantastic - like an insert. Maybe next year...

Now this next piece is the pride and joy of the whole house. It houses EVERYTHING. It is amazing. We still have some space to fill in it (something decorative at the top - any ideas?), but are thoroughly enjoying having dedicated, ample space for toys, books, games, CDs, movies, etc. A dream come true I tell you!

I love posts like this one. I love to see what people do with their homes, and you have done wonderful stuff! I love the built-ins! What a wonderful addition. And that one in your family room is amazing! I would love something like it in my own house someday! Keep up all the hard work and show us when you're done!

Love all those new cabinets. My suggestion at the top of the cabinets (in the room off the kitchen?) is some lovely colored vases of different shapes.

Oh.My.Gosh. I'm stealing your house. There is nothing more beautiful to me than built-in bookshelves. And your other storage piece is to die for! Pretty please, can I have some?

So you are totally reading my mind. Our tiny (tiny tiny) 98 yr old house has no storage space and I'm at a loss for exactly what to do to fix it. I'm going to make Paul read this blog entry and hope he will be inspired to get to work! It looks great.
