Look How Much We've Grown - 2 years and 5 years

About a week ago the little boys had their well-child appointments at the doctor's office. It was quite the adventure. I think that the older kids get the harder going to the doctor is. They really know what is going on and they really stress out a lot more and they really don't forget...

Much like last year, Lt. didn't like much about going to the doctor. He didn't like being measured or inspected in any way, shape, or form. He didn't like "racing" down the hall with D so the doctor could check out his feet. Turns out he has flat feet - who knew!? I guess we need to start buying him shoes with arches to help his leg muscles out (if anybody knows of any good shoe brands, let me know!). He did like the lollipop that I brought from home for him. He didn't like that I wouldn't give it to him until after he got his shots. He did like watching Word World on Paul's phone while waiting for the nurse. He most definitely did not like getting his shots, although he cried for less than a minute and then he was good to go. He did like getting stickers on the way out. He did like crumpling up all his stickers before we got home. What we learned about Lt. (besides the flat feet part) is that he is healthy and growing right on track. We kind of suspected that though. He weighs almost 26 pounds (watch out big brother!) and is 35 inches tall - putting him in the 76th percentile for his height!!! What!?!!? Unheard of!! We are very, very used to D making sure there is a bottom on the growth curve. We're still waiting for the Lt. to talk more because we're not so great at the guessing game. The doc told us that 2nd children are notorious for being late talkers (which was the exact opposite of what I thought - I thought they would talk earlier!) because they have lots of people around to do the talking for them (mom, dad, brother or sister). Interesting!

Now for our resident expert on doctor appointments - D. He did a great job getting weighed (almost 31 pounds) and measured (39.5 inches). He still was not a fan of having his blood pressure taken, but the nurse was impressed that he sat so still the whole time so she didn't have to redo it. He did great on his eye exam and on the general inspection by the doc. And he provided a urine sample like a champ. Things took a turn for the worse though once Nurse Ratched came into the room with her vaccinations. Just kidding, she was a very nice nurse. She asked who wanted to go first and D immediately volunteered Lt. So Lt. unknowingly hopped up on the table and continued watching Word World on Paul's phone while eating his lolli. Then he got poked. Twice. And he cried. And then D started to freak out. He hid under the counter and Paul had to pull him out. They tried to lay him down on the table and he was thrashing around and tearing up the paper on the table (oh, and at this point he was screaming like a banshee). Once they finally got him pinned down (I'm surprised they didn't have to call for backup) he got his three shots. Then we got the heck out of there. It took him about 20 minutes to walk from our room back to the front desk because the shots made it so he instantaneously couldn't walk (he may win an Oscar this year). He did appreciate the animal stickers he picked out at the front desk. And then it took us another 40 minutes to walk out to the car. I'm happy to report that after two days of not being able to walk normally, he could finally resume his regular activities with no problems. Oh, and he is also healthy and growing!

Wow. Talk about a lot of drama. I don't know if the "two-for-one" appointments are that great or not. But the best news of all - D won't need any more immunizations for FIVE YEARS. And Lt. won't need any more for THREE YEARS. Too bad poor little No-No is just getting started...

You described it perfectly! The girls' well check-ups were always around the same time since they were born in the same month. It always feels like I've been working out after we leave. Up until Shelby's last appointment she would freak out when I dragged her in for one of Milo's appointments. She had to make sure she told everyone (parking lot, elevator, waiting room, etc) that SHE was not going to get any shots today. She made sure to tell everyone because surely one of those people would be the one with the needles. Oh the things that never occur to you before having kids. LOL!

LOL! It sounds like we have all been in the same boat! I'm glad you're boys are doing well, and that D survived the shots...LOL! what drama indeed! The last time I made Mimi get a flu shot (I think she was five) there were three of us holding her down and one giving her the shot. I decided after that that it just wasn't worth it. Luckily she doesn't have to have any shots until she's 11...as she reminds me every time we go to the doctor for her or the others!
